A Grip Worth Talking About — The Upgrade You Can Feel
We’re always looking for ways to make our rods better — not just prettier or lighter, but better where it counts. So when we came across a new form of slow-growth cork from the southern forests of Europe, unlike anything we’d seen before, we knew we had to bring it home to Maine Fly Company. Now featured on select rods, this cork delivers a noticeable difference in both performance and feel.
Unlike standard cork grips — which are often built from thicker, porous sections filled with heavy filler to hide imperfections — this material comes from thin-cut, slow-growth cork bark. That slower growth means tighter, denser cork cells, smaller pores, and virtually no filler. The result? A smoother, more durable handle that won’t pit, chip, or crumble over time. It’s pure cork — not cork mixed with filler or rubber caps — which keeps the grip feather-light and incredibly responsive.
Those tighter cork cells also give anglers what we call “fish feel” — better transmission of vibration through the rod, making it easier to detect subtle strikes and read the current. It’s not just prettier cork (though it sure looks the part) — it’s a functional upgrade that enhances connection, comfort, and control with every cast.
This new cork represents everything we love about rod building: craftsmanship, performance, and a little bit of discovery. Because when we find something this good, we don’t keep it a secret — we build it into the rods we’re proud to put our name on.
